MISSION
Tuesday 16 May 2006
Yesterday I saw my brother Paul, Brother of the
Mill Hill Missionaries. He introduced Mieke
and me to one of his friends Father Frans Baartmans. While sharing our
experience with development/missionary work, Father Frans threw in the
question: "Actually, what's mission?" It left us flabbergasted,
fortunately he had thought about it. It couldn't be avoided or the state of the
Church at large came up as well, and I must say our worries and hopes came
pretty close together.
Of course, the entire conversation continued to
linger on in my mind, and then I stroke on a link between the state of the Church and the missionary
work. Let me put it like this. I
distinguish three circles:
|
|
(i) The unconditional followers of the Church
avant la lettre: Fort Vatican; (ii) The mainstream
Roman Catholics that have a warm feeling towards their traditional belief, without accepting
all that is put in front of them; (iii) All
other people of good will. Mission now is: Breaking the walls of the fort and diffusing thoughts and ideas with all the people of good will |
