GHANA

My first real assignment brought us to Ghana. That is to say: myself, my lovely bride and the fruit of both of us neatly packed up in her. I am determined to expand in a later stage on our comings, beings and goings during that time, but for now would like to focus on some recent events.

Nonetheless, it was from that first stay that we knew Father Herbert Herrity. At the time we found him an amiable person and devout priest to become a friend when he had settled back in Scotland on behalf of his eyesight. It didn't take long before we started pondering about a revisit of the country where all of us had set off their occupations, be it in different callings.

After having decided to go the three of us ran into a young Ghanaian priest who had come to Holland for medical treatment. After months of high hopes the fellow died in our environs. In his simple and easy ways this Father Pius made a great impression on those who met him during his brief stay.

This has given the inspiration to establish in his memory a fund for the needy in the area of his birth, thus enabling people with a great heart in our region to do something for people with little means in North-West Ghana.

With the contributions loans are issued to give people the necessary start for making their own living. It concerns the group of un-educated, handicapped and others who do not qualify for other funding. With the purchase of carpenter's equipment, a baker's oven, a sewing machine, a weaving yarn, materials and what have you they are making a start with self-employment.

Basic Care Ghana Foundation is running the fund in collaboration with their network in Ghana. This ensures well spending and retributions of the loans.

Donations can be remitted to the account number 479004595 of Basic Care Ghana Foundation in Bemmel. Please quote: in favor of Father Pius Fund, Ghana
