The French Revolution of 1789 triggered also slave uprisings in the Caribbean. Toussaint L'Ouverture led the uprising on the island, which comprises the nowadays Haiti and Saint Domingue. Slavery was tried to be restored under Napoleon Bonaparte around 1802. Toussaint was captured and exiled to France where he died in prison. On January 1, 1804 Jean Jacques Dessalines proclaimed himself ruler of part of the island, which was called Haiti, the higher place.
